Blocked drain

Stop using every sink, bath and toilet in the house, then check whether the blockage is inside or at the chamber outside.

Stop it

  1. Stop all water use - sinks, baths, showers and toilets.
  2. Check other fittings: if only one sink is blocked, the problem may be local. If several are affected, it may be the main drain.
  3. If you have an external inspection chamber, lift the cover carefully and see whether water is backing up there.

Make it safe

  1. Wear gloves. Drain water can be contaminated.
  2. Keep the chamber cover secure so nobody steps into an open hole.
  3. If sewage is overflowing indoors, keep people out of the room and ventilate if safe to do so.

What not to do

  • Do not pour caustic drain chemicals repeatedly - they can damage pipes and make a later repair worse.
  • Do not keep flushing toilets that are already backing up.
  • Do not put rods into a live electrical area or work alone in an unsafe chamber.
