Burst pipe

Turn off your stop tap, then open every cold tap in the house. That drains the pipes and stops water feeding the leak.

Stop it

  1. Close the stop tap. Usually under the kitchen sink. Not sure where yours is?
  2. Open every cold tap, starting downstairs.
  3. Turn off the heating and open the hot taps too once it has cooled.

Make it safe

  1. If water is near sockets, lights or the consumer unit, switch the electricity off at the consumer unit.
  2. Put buckets under the leak and towels around it.
  3. Move anything that matters out of the room.

What not to do

  • Do not go into a loft with standing water above a ceiling. Pierce the bulge from below, from the side, with a bucket underneath.
  • Do not switch anything on to test it.
  • Do not throw the wet plasterboard away before your insurer has seen it.
