Emergency Guide

No hot water

Check the cylinder thermostat, the immersion switch and the programmer before assuming the cylinder has failed.

Check these first

  1. Check the programmer or timer is set to heat hot water at the right times.
  2. Confirm the immersion switch (often labelled "water heater") is on at the fused spur or consumer unit.
  3. Look at the cylinder thermostat dial - if it has been turned right down, turn it back to a sensible mid setting.

Make it safe

  1. If you smell gas or suspect a gas boiler fault, leave the area and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
  2. Do not open the cylinder or touch safety valves if water is discharging heavily - that can be a pressure fault.
  3. Keep children and pets away from any hot discharge from valves or pipework.

What not to do

  • Do not drain an unvented cylinder yourself unless you know the system.
  • Do not keep resetting a tripped RCD without finding the cause.
  • Do not assume a new cylinder is the only answer - many faults are thermostats, valves or immersion heaters.
